It's a kind of magic: High Precision of FARO Focus3D!

On my way to find the best tools for working with point clouds, I was deeply impressed about the enhancements I found in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. I tried RealityCapture developed by the company: CapturingReality. How is it possible, that a refining process can make such significant improvements in the clearness of a point cloud? "Chance or Necessity" was my question - remembering Jacques Monod 1970. I made some tests and research to find an answer and also to be sure, that I'm doing right. I attached some screenshots to explain this. The red point cloud is the original, coming from FARO SCENE and imported in ReCap without grid function. The green one is the same SCENE point cloud but meshed in RealityCapture, exported again as a point cloud and imported in ReCap in the same way. The two point clouds are sectioned in the same depth, exactly 30mm. So it is a fair comparison. Clever applied mathematics enable a high precise arithmetic average. It's a kind of magic, how precise the FARO point clouds can be. I have results, that are accurate in a range less than 0.5 mm! Of course, it depends on the registration in SCENE, where you should not be satisfied with tensions of more than a few millimetres. So this is possible anyway. But the resulting point clouds can be improved. And then you realize that you can get much more out of your FARO Focus3D, than you ever thought about. And these are the good news. Thanks to the guys in Bratislava for their cleverly applied mathematics and to FARO for their obviously precise laser scanners. Andreas Habelt, June 2018
